Registration for the 2023 Apra Indiana Fall Conference is now open. This in-person conference will take place on Thursday, November 30, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at The Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis, IN.

Registration for Apra Indiana members is $40. Non-Apra Indiana members are also welcome to attend. The non-member registration rate is $50.

Not already a member? Membership is still free for 2023. You can join or renew

your membership on our website. Registration closes on 11/16/2023, or when we reach 64 attendees per venue capacity.

Register now to join us for our last conference of 2023! The keynote speaker will be Cathy Spieth, Prospect Research Manager of United Way Central Indiana.

Registration for the 2023 Apra Indiana Spring Conference

Registration for the 2023 Apra Indiana Spring Conference is now open. This in-person conference will take place on Tuesday, May 16, 2023 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at The Indiana Historical Society in Indianapolis, IN.

Early bird registration for Apra Indiana members is $30 and the early bird rates will be available through April 10. Regular registration for Apra Indiana members is $40 and will be available from April 11 until registration closes on April 26. Non-Apra Indiana members are also welcome to attend. The non-member registration rate is $50.

Not already a member? Membership is still free for 2023. You can join or renew

your membership on our website. Registration closes on 04/26/2023, or when we reach 64 attendees per venue capacity.

Register now to join us for our first conference of 2023! The keynote speaker will be Sarah Daly, Director of Prospect Research from Southern Methodist University in Dallas, TX. Sarah also serves as Secretary on the Apra International Board of Directors.

Don’t miss out on the wonderful opportunity to share your unique skills, expertise and best practices with the Apra Indiana community! Additionally, all speakers will receive complimentary registration!

Proposal Guidelines:

1) Proposed presentations can be on any prospect development topic that falls within one of these four categories: Prospect Research, Prospect Management, Fundraising Data Science, or Innovations & Trends.

Proposal guidelines:

Bond T. Lammey is a managing associate at Bentz Whaley Flessner specializing in prospect development. Bond’s experience ranges from higher education to academic medicine, large and small social service agencies, and national and local member/cause organizations. She is accomplished in principal gift prospecting, working with non-natural constituencies, daily wealth screenings, and comprehensive prospect development strategies.

Prior to joining BWF, Bond led prospect research efforts at the University of Chicago, where she oversaw the central prospect research team and developed integrated strategies with prospect management, analytics, corporate and foundation relations research, and non-central research teams.

Bond received her Bachelor of Arts in Sociology and her Master of Management in Nonprofit Administration, both from North Park University in Chicago, Illinois. She is on the board of APRA International and has presented at CASE, SunGard, and APRA conferences.

APRA-IN Skills Workshop Presenter Spotlight: Ralph Rohrer

Ralph holds the position of Chief of Research, Development Research Services, in the University Development Office of the Purdue Research Foundation. His main focus is on major gift prospect identification and research. Ralph directed the Development Research department at Purdue through its ‎successful Purdue: Vision 21 campaign (1991-94). From 1986-91, he directed ‎the Development Research department at the University of Chicago through ‎its successful Campaign for the Arts and Sciences and in the early phase of ‎the University’s Centennial Campaign. Ralph is currently in his fifth term on the ‎board of the Indiana chapter of the Association of Professional Researchers ‎for Advancement (APRA). His board member duties have included developing ‎sponsor relationships, organizing state conferences, editing the chapter ‎newsletter, and serving as chapter president. Ralph has spoken at APRA ‎International conferences and at APRA state conferences in Illinois, Michigan, ‎and Indiana. He has written for APRA Connections, a ‎professional journal.‎ ‎ ‎

Prior to his career in development, Ralph worked as the Business Reference ‎Librarian at the University of Chicago. He also worked as General Reference ‎Librarian for the University of Chicago and for Indiana University. Ralph holds a ‎MLS from Indiana University and an AB from Wabash College. Emily Davis began as a research associate at the Indiana University Foundation and was promoted to development analyst in 2011. In addition to assisting her science- and health-related clients with research, she has completed research for the IU and IU Foundation presidents as well as on international prospects. She received her undergraduate degrees from Ball State University and her master’s degree from Indiana University Bloomington. In her free time, she enjoys completing freelance editing and formatting work when not watching Thomas the Train with her toddler. Nancy Doemel, Past APRA-IN President

Nancy J. Doemel, 71, of Crawfordsville, died Saturday, June 18, in Indianapolis.

Born December 28, 1944, she was the daughter of Dale and Irene Walcutt.

Nancy graduated from Tiffin Columbian High School (Ohio) in 1963, received her Bachelor of Arts from Wittenberg University in 1966, and her Masters of Arts from Purdue University in 1975.

Nancy married William N. Doemel soon after her graduation from Wittenberg, and she worked as an English teacher in the Bartholomew Consolidated School District, Columbus, IN, while Bill finished his PhD.

From 1977 to 1979 she was a research associate at the Center for Science, Technology, and Public Policy at Indiana University. She authored a user’s guide to energy issues, “Energy in Indiana”, and coauthored reports on creating land use policy in the Hoosier National Forest and on the Garrison Diversion Project in North Dakota. She served as citizen advisor to the National Forest Service from 1976-78.

Nancy served Wabash College as Director of Corporate and Foundation Relations from 1979 until her retirement in 2010, and from 1979 to 1997 had the additional responsibility as part-time Director of the Great Lakes Colleges Association Scotland Program. In 31 years working at Wabash she raised more than $30 million for the college.

In June she was honored by the Indiana Philanthropy Alliance with the 2016 Hazelett Award in Grantmaking.

Nancy lived out her commitment to philanthropy and community service in many ways. She was a founding member of the Montgomery County Community Foundation (MCCF) and has served two terms on the Board of Directors for a total of 12 years. She advised the Montgomery County Free Clinic Board as they raised over $1.2 million to build a new clinic to serve medical needs of the low-income families and individuals. She worked with her church on a $308,000 capital campaign providing fundraising guidance and grant writing assistance to meet this goal. She was active with the League of Women Voters, first in Land Use and Environmental Issues, Planning and Zoning, and more recently in Economic Health.

“She was a tremendous leader who through her example showed what it truly means to be a volunteer community worker,” said MCCF Executive Director Kelly Taylor. “Her dedication, patience and hard work got results and set high exemplary standards for those with whom she worked. She made everyone better under her leadership.”

Nancy was also an accomplished quilter, but noted in an article in Wabash Magazine that her art “did not come easily.” The article’s writer concludes: “That’s surprising to hear from a woman so skilled at weaving together disparate people and organizations to make something good and lasting for others.”

Nancy was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Dale Doemel, who died March 9, 2016.

She is survived by her husband, William N. Doemel; her sister, Ann Kohler (John); a niece, Beth Kohler Brown, and nephew, Grant Kohler (Dr. Katherine); and three grandnieces, Megan and Hannah Brown, and Madelyn Kohler.

A memorial service for Nancy was held July 23 at 3 p.m. in the Wabash Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made either to one of these funds at the Montgomery County Community Foundation, PO Box 334, Crawfordsville, IN 47933

• The Dr. William and Ms. Nancy Doemel Fund—an unrestricted fund to benefit the Montgomery County Community Foundation

• The Women’s Legacy Fund—to provide support for nonprofit agencies that serve women and children of Montgomery County

• The William, Nancy and Christopher Doemel Organ Maintenance Fund for Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church—to provide funding for major repairs of the organ located at the Wabash Avenue Presbyterian Church, Crawfordsville, Indiana.

Donations can also be made to the Nancy J. Doemel Fund for Study Abroad, Wabash College, PO Box 352, Crawfordsville, IN, 47933.

APRA-IL Fall 2016 Conference

Our sister organization, APRA-IL, will be hosting a half day networking event at Northwestern University on September 30, 2016. In an effort to build and strengthen the APRA-IL community, their program this year emphasizes providing space and time to collaborate, share and learn from fellow members and attendees.

There will be two tracks for participants to choose from; Prospect Research and Data Analytics/Prospect Management. Each track will have activities and conversation geared towards the issues and the topics of interest to those participating.

We are excited to announce a new award that has been created to build recognition for APRA-IN members within their own organizations, cultivate prestige amongst their APRA peers, and to develop credibility for advancement in their career. The award will recognize a member who has successfully lead a project within their organization in collaboration with other departments or organizations.

The application process will require that you describe the problem or situation that you were facing within your organization. An explanation of how the problem or situation was resolved or improved, and the impact it had on the organization or the field of research is required. You should describe any collaboration that was done with other departments or organizations and the lessons learned from the project.

This is a chance to share your success with other researchers faced with similar challenges. We hope you will consider nominating yourself or a peer who has lead a project. The winner will receive a certificate for display and free attendance to an APRA-IN function in 2016. Since May, 2012, Marilyn has served as the Chief Operating Officer at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, on the campus of Indiana University – Purdue University, Indianapolis (IUPUI). As the COO, Marilyn is responsible for all day-to-day internal operations and process improvement, and supervises and oversees the human resources, marketing, technology, facilities and special events areas.

Prior to this position, Marilyn served for 9 years as the Senior Consultant in Training and Organization Development with the Human Resources Administration office at IUPUI. She consulted with offices and departments to plan, develop, implement and evaluate training services, employee development initiatives and organization development interventions.

Her facilitation expertise areas are strategic planning, process improvement, and team building, and she serves as a coach for staff, in short and long-term coaching relationships. She has experience in faith-based, social services and higher education non-profit organizations.

Leigh Anne Johnson is currently an Indiana Division Librarian at the Indiana State Library. Her specialization is Indiana Newspapers. She is the curator of ISL’s historic newspapers and current subscriptions, as well as the microfilmed newspapers. She has been in this role for almost 3 years. Formerly, Leigh Anne was a librarian in the Genealogy Division at the State Library for 5 years.

She received her Master of Library Science degree from Indiana University at Indianapolis in 2009. She also holds another master’s degree in Violin Performance from Northern Arizona University, and majored in music at Butler University, where she received her undergraduate degree.

The APRA-IN Basic and Advanced Skills Workshop will be Thursday, August 27, 2015, at the Indiana University Foundation’s landmark Showalter House. Showalter House provides an engaging venue for new and seasoned prospect researchers to gain and to refresh skills to improve their professional abilities. Plan to learn about prospect management, data analytics, and researching medical professionals as well as several other aspects of prospect research.
